He’s not your daddy’s preacher.
He is the lead on OWNs latest reality show “The Book of John Gray.”
Pastor John Gray, sat down with EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas to share his thoughts on perception, learning opportunities and the American Airlines viral video.
EUR: What did you learn from filming this TV show?
Aventer Gray: I’ve learned there are seasons for different life elevations. In this moment, I feel like God wants to stop the manipulation, he wants to show his heart is for everybody and we are the vessels he is using to do that. Instead of being afraid of inviting everyone into our home, I’ve become a little more comfortable with it. I’ve learned to embrace it and understand everyone isn’t going to like us. As long as, the Lord is pleased with me and my husband, he is pleased with me. We do care how people perceive our family but we feel like God has breathed on us and he will continue to…
Pastor John Gray: …I don’t! I don’t care how they perceive our family, as long as we know the truth because I can’t control how people will interpret our lives once it’s disseminated. The fear is the unknown. They’re going to say ugly things on the internet like, ‘John Gray is fat,’ or ‘your wife is ugly!’ And these people usually have 13 followers with a private page.
So, I told my wife, you can’t respond (to internet trolls) because the moment you respond, you bring them to your platform and give them a microphone they never had. What I’ve learned from this experience is, I’m enough. I didn’t become anything for this show to happen, I was me. Whatever that means people are going to see it. We hope people walk away with understanding that whatever station of life you are in…you don’t have to become anything, you don’t have to conjure or manifest or hate on anybody else, just be authentically who you are in the moment you’re in. If it’s your time, it’s your time. Right now, it’s our time and when it’s somebody else’s time, we’re going to celebrate them.
EUR: Has American Airlines celebrated the Gray family yet? Have you received an apology or a lifetime of free first class travel?
Aventer Gray: This is an opportunity to bridge-build and training for their flight attendants. Any mother in that situation would protect their children. Just like in ‘The Book of John Gray’ we promote resolution and help. American Airlines might be the one we help.
Pastor John Gray: We’re still working through it. It’s ongoing. This is what the heart of the show is, fighting to build bridges, even in the areas where there is conflict. That’s the power of ‘The Book of John Gray.’ I love how my wife has maintained her integrity because we’ve talk to many people, who’ve said, ‘if it had been me, le me tell you what I would have done and said!’
“The Book of John Gray,” airs on Saturday nights on OWN.
