Bishop Kimathi Nelson (l) with wife Nailah Nelson (r) and Bormer Black Panther Party leader Elaine Brown (center) during a Feb. 20, 2017 event in Houston.

The Shrine of the Black Madonna Cultural and Events Center hosted a lecture by Elaine Brown, former chairperson of the Black Panther Party (BPP). Brown shared countless intimate stories about her days in the BPP, and the impact they had on the movement both then and even now. However, Brown, who signed copies of her book “A Taste of Power,” spent the lion’s share of her time discussing the state of Black people today, and the need for a resurrection of a movement for justice. Attendees included Bishop Kimathi Nelson, Nailah Nelson, Alicia Gachett, Loryn Clark, Jasmin Weaver, Kevin Johnson, Evvan Croll, Jackie Spivey-Wilson, Walker Smith, Micah Decuire, and many others
