City Controller Chris Brown recently hosted the City’s 8th Annual Black History Month Program featuring as panelists former city council members Anthony Hall and Ada Edwards, and NAACP Houston president Dr. James Douglas. The program, organized by Jackie Pope, was moderated by Defender CEO Sonceria Messiah Jiles. Panelists discussed various aspects of Houston history, including the origins of the ward system, Black representation in local government and more. In attendance were Harry Hayes, Dr. James Ward, Stephen Williams, Ronald Lewis, Jesse Boone, Willie Belle Boone, Randy Tims, Irma Reyes, Mary Wilson, Vera Parker, Londa Singleton, Charisse Mosely, C.J. Messiah, Shannan Nobles, Theresa Watson, Sandra Zeno, Toni Middleton Lewis, Yolanda Brown and many more.
