The Houston Public Library’s Julia Ideson Building recently played host to Hip Hop for Literacy featuring legendary MC Slick Rick. The event, which highlighted the city’s love of hip hop, included a live cypher with local MCs, dance performances, free giveaways and a Q&A session with Slick Rick moderated by Houston Poet Laurate, Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton. Hip Hop for Literacy seeks to use the popular music genre to encourage reading in youth and adults. Attendees included event organizer Hiawatha Henry, Resha Garner (Precision), Lil Jesse, Addixion, Lisa Rayford, Angie Valdez, Nadia Jackson, Yvonnette McLean, Shaun Johnson and many others.
