During their last days of school, members of the Lawson Academy took time out to celebrate the SPARK Park Dedication at their campus. The SPARK School Program works with schools and neighborhoods to develop community parks on public school grounds. In the past 30-plus years, SPARK has built over 200 community parks throughout Harris County. Founded in 2002, the Lawson Academy (grades 6 – 8) provides single-gender education (boys learn with boys; girls learn with girls) and offers specialized reading and math programs. Attendees included Rev. William Lawson, Dr. Marthea Raney (Principal), Mary Ramos, Cheryl Lawson, Chavon Carr, Yolanda Smith, Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, Lawrence Battle, Annette Simmons, Kevin Graham, Paul Washington, Councilmember Dwight Boykins and others.
