The Houston Arts Alliance’s Folklife + Civic Engagement program and Houston Museum of African American Culture presented A Mardi Gras Indian Celebration recently at HMAAC. Folk Arts Fellowship grantee and master artist Terrence Gasper and his apprentices, Keith Green, Elisha Barnes and Jaylon Warner, have been working together to study the fine points of Mardi Gras Indian tradition for the last nine months. They offered a short talk/demonstration on the Mardi Gras Indian tradition. Gasper, the Big Chief of the White Eagle tribe, brought his skills to Houston after fleeing Hurricane Katrina. Attendees included event organizers John Guess and Pat Jasper, Dominique Mitchell, Rosyland Jeffries, Kenneth Pinkney, Danielle Smith, Arie White, Spencer Benford and many more.
