As part of the Yates School of Communications' 40th Anniversary, the school hosted its Best of the Best Awards, a luncheon celebrating excellence in commercial photography, printing technology, radio broadcasting, narrative film and sports media. The event was held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Houston Branch.

In conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the Yates School of Communications, the magnet school presented its Best of the Best Awards in the areas of commercial photography, printing technology, radio broadcasting, narrative film and sports media. The awards luncheon was held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Houston Branch, and was preceded by two workshops. The emcees were KRIV-TV news anchor Jonathan Martin and student Gabrielle Braziel. DeeJay SupaStar added the music beat that kept the program moving. After greetings from Defender CEO Sonceria “Sonny” Messiah Jiles, Federal Reserve Houston Branch Vice President Donald Bowers and Yates Assistant Principal Cherinta Baldwin, the Yates JROTC presented the colors. St. John’s United Methodist Church Pastor Rudy Rasmus delivered the invocation. Keynote speaker D’Artagnan Bebel, vice president and general manager at KRIV-TV Fox 26, delivered a powerful presentation on “branding.” The highlight of the luncheon was the Best of the Best Awards, which included $1000 scholarships in each of the four areas. Attendees included Asia Marshall, Jameshia Smith, Aisha Harris, Claudine Ntirampeba, Asukulu Akili, Tyrone Dargins, Mmunga Akili, Zytiek Harrison, Ted Irving, Brittney Sheppard, Ray Carrington III, Destiny Carrier, Cody Weaver, Camren Williams, Andrea Brown, Mahdi Bey, Kazsia Cose, Di’Avolique Dunning and many more.
