Malik Yoba is returning to the small screen to revisit one of his roles from two decades ago. Varietyreports that Yoba will be reprising his role as J.C Williams for ABC’s New York Undercover reboot.
The revamp of the 90’s cop drama fast forwards 20 years from where the show left off and shows Williams as the overseer of his unit. The show will follow detectives Nat Gilmore and Melissa Ortiz as they solve crime throughout New York City under Williams’ guidance. The mastermind behind the original series Dick Wolf will be returning to work behind the scenes for the reboot as well.
New York Undercover was groundbreaking after it premiered on FOX in 1994. It was the first cop series that starred two actors of color in lead roles, unlike NYPD Blue and Law & Order. The original show follow Det. Williams and Det. Eddie Torres, played by Michael DeLorenzo for four seasons. After DeLorenzo’s character died in season three, the show lost their momentum and was cancelled after the fourth season.
Other stars from the series are expected to make appearances on the pilot as well. Shooting is set to begin in March.
