Michelle Williams, formerly of Destiny’s Child, has reportedly checked herself into a mental health facility.
“For years I have dedicated myself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to recognize when it’s time to seek help, support and guidance from those that love and care for your wellbeing,” she said in a statement to TMZ.
“Today I proudly, happily and healthily stand here as someone who will continue to always lead by example as I tirelessly advocate for the betterment of those in need.”
“For years I’m in one of the top-selling female groups of all time suffering with depression,” Williams said. “When I disclosed it to our manager at the time — bless his heart — he was like, ‘y’all just signed a multi-million dollar deal, you’re about to go on tour, what do you have to be depressed about?'”
Williams career since leaving Destiny’s Child has brought her from gospel, to Broadway and even an appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race. But her connection to the girl group has followed her every step of the way.
“The association of Destiny’s Child, what it has taught me, what it has given me, that will never be replaced. I will be Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child probably for the rest of my life,” she said.
