Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 4000 Eastex Freeway (North U.S. Highway 59) about 7:30 a.m. today (Dec. 21).

The identity of the deceased victim is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant G. Hall and Officer T. Van reported:

A box truck carrying a load of alcoholic beverages was traveling northbound on the Eastex Freeway and exited the westbound ramp to the 610 North Loop.

Police said the truck was loaded with alcoholic beverages.

The truck went around the curve of the ramp too fast and struck and toppled over the guardrail, landing on the Eastex Freeway northbound lanes below.  The truck caught fire and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.  No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The investigation is continuing.
