Senfronia Thompson OpEd: Leading the fight against diabetes

By: Rep. Senfronia Thompson

State Representative, District 141

As we find ourselves in the midst of another holiday season, I’m often reminded that in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, our health often takes a backseat to everything else.  This must change, and what better way to start than by seizing the opportunity over the holidays to put our health and wellbeing back in the front seat?

As an elected representative to the Texas Legislature, I have long advocated for better health care treatment and outcomes for women and minority communities, and I can recognize a good thing when I see it.

I recently learned about a new effort from Eli Lilly and Company called the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center, which helps to address diabetes patients’ medical and financial needs. The center helps eligible patients, including those who don’t have insurance, access life-saving insulin by simply going to calling the helpline at 833-808-1234.

The Lilly Diabetes Solution Center is a step in the right direction to help give our community the gift that they deserve this holiday season – their good health.

State Representative Senfronia Thompson has represented District 141 for over four decades and is currently serving her 23rdterm in the Texas House of Representatives.

As the dean of women legislators, Rep. Thompson has the distinct honor of being the longest-serving woman and African-American in Texas history.
