Before a capacity crowd, the Houston Defender Media Group and Kelsey-Seybold Clinic will host Conversations and Coffee with Houston Independent School District (HISD) Superintendent Richard Carranza from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Main Campus, 2nd floor rotunda, 2727 W. Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77025.

The one-on-one interview with Carranza will be conducted by Houston Defender Publisher Sonceria Messiah Jiles. Following the program, members of the Black community will grade HISD on the interview topics of student academics, teacher relations, school finance and minority contracts.

Responding to the purpose of the event, Messiah Jiles commented, “Our Conversations and Coffee series gives the Black community an opportunity to engage up close with Houston leaders on subjects important to our community. Mr. Carranza is the first leader in our new series to be interviewed as he has just finished his first school year with HISD, which has a 24.5 percent Black student population. This event presents an excellent opportunity for the Black community to get answers to their questions, grade the District, and learn how they can better support youth and education in our city. Additional leaders will be selected for upcoming Conversations and Coffee events.”

The Black community’s report card for HISD will be released in an upcoming edition of the Houston Defender. The audience responder’s makeup will include members of the corporate, business, academia, clergy, government and nonprofit arenas. The media is invited to attend.
