As artificial intelligence continues to reshape everything from classrooms to newsrooms, leaders at Texas Southern University say understanding the technology is no longer optional. It’s essential.

That urgency is driving the university’s School of Communication as it hosts its 44th Annual Media and Communication Conference, known as CommWeek, from April 6–10 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Building on campus.

This year’s theme, “Beyond the Algorithm: Reimagining Media, Learning & Innovation with AI,” places artificial intelligence at the center of conversations about the future of journalism, entertainment, and education.

But organizers say the weeklong event is about more than panels and presentations; it’s about preparing students and the broader community for a rapidly changing world.

“We have been consistent with our objectives regarding the CommWeek each year, but this year’s theme, ‘Beyond the Algorithm: Reimagining Media, Learning & Innovation with AI’ is not simply a theme, it is a call to critically engage with one of the most transformative forces shaping our time,” said Anthony Ogbo, chair of CommWeek.

From job applications screened by algorithms to news curated by AI-driven platforms, the technology is quietly shaping everyday life. Without a clear understanding of how it works, experts warn that communities risk becoming consumers of technology rather than creators—or, worse, being negatively impacted by systems they don’t fully understand.

Throughout the week, panels, workshops, a career fair, and networking events will explore how AI is transforming media business models, redefining teaching methods, and changing the way audiences engage with content. Organizers say those conversations are especially important for Black communities, which have historically been underrepresented in emerging technology spaces.

“Communication Week represents more than a conference; it is a powerful platform to strengthen the School of Communication’s brand, showcasing the excellence of our students and faculty, and the opportunity to highlight the innovative work happening across our programs,” Caldwell said. “By bringing together industry leaders, scholars, and alumni, we create collaborative connections that position our school as a hub for forward-thinking communication education.”

Added Ogbo, “Artificial intelligence is no longer theoretical; it is actively redefining journalism, entertainment, and education in real time. CommWeek is designed to move beyond passive discussion and toward meaningful preparation—equipping students and the broader community with both the technical fluency and ethical awareness required in this evolving landscape. We must ensure that innovation does not outpace responsibility. Our goal is to cultivate thinkers and practitioners who can harness AI thoughtfully, interrogate its implications, and contribute to a digital economy in ways that are both impactful and principled.”

Beyond the discussions, CommWeek also serves a practical purpose—raising scholarship funds for students, particularly those who are gifted but face financial barriers. Those funds help cover tuition, educational resources, and living expenses, supporting student retention and long-term success.

Organizers are encouraging not just students and academics, but community members to attend and engage.
