Donald Trump has more than hinted at his desire to be king of America.

Imagine that.

But as unimaginable as the idea of a monarchy may seem in America, Trump’s first six months as president have seemed more authoritarian than any of us can imagine. What Trump wants, he has seemed to get with the Senate, House of Representatives and Supreme Court all stacked and ruling in his favor.

The federal courts have offered some pushback, but either Trump has ignored their rulings or the conservative-leaning Supreme Court has supported Trump.

Trump has been successful in obliterating diversity, equity and inclusion, and any form of affirmative action, while successfully deporting immigrants in mass without any due process, and he has displaced thousands of American federal workers without much pushback.

But his latest show of unilateral power has come in the passage of his recent “Big Beautiful Bill”, also known as the “Big Ugly Bill,” that will make substantial cuts to Medicaid, federal financial aid, government-backed student loans, SNAP and Section 8, while transferring major dollars to his wealthy friends, diverting money from public schools to charter and private schools and his seemingly relentless war against Mexican immigrants.

The Republicans outnumber Democrats in both Houses, and Trump’s Republican cohorts seem afraid to push back on his prohibitive policies that will do just as much harm to their white constituents as they are doing to Black people in America.

Elon Musk, the architect of the mass cuts to the federal workforce, is now proposing a third political party. But should he be trusted after initially being part of Trump’s brain trust?

In our latest episode of the Defender Roundtable, the panel discusses Trump’s authoritarian rule and what this could mean for Black Americans.
