Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Houston native Jalen Hurts is making a huge impact off the field, donating $200,000 to provide air conditioning for local schools in the city.
The generous gift from the 25-year-old NFL star and product of Channelview High School will fund the installation of 300 new AC units benefiting over 5,000 students across 10 Philadelphia schools.
Dr. Tony B. Watlington Sr., superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia, revealed the much-needed donation while appearing on Good Morning America. He said more than half of the district’s schools currently lack adequate air conditioning, forcing students to be sent home early when temperatures climb above 86 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
“When the temperature climbs higher than 86 to 90 degrees, we too often have to let our kids go home early,” Watlington said. “And that really impacts student achievement.”
Hurts, who announced the donation during a visit to one of the Philadelphia schools, expressed his desire to support the students and provide a comfortable learning environment.
Earlier this year, Hurts also paid for the funeral expenses of North Shore senior football player Jarvon Coles, who had been shot and killed at a party.
“I think back to my time as a student, not being able to imagine some of the things that you guys have to go through,” Hurts told the students. “I just want to serve you guys and help in any way I can.”
The superintendent lauded Hurts’ generosity, stating the AC units will drastically improve conditions for thousands of students struggling with stifling classroom temperatures that disrupt the school day.
Beyond his talents on the gridiron, Hurts’ $200,000 donation demonstrates his commitment to uplifting the Philadelphia community and ensuring local youth have access to an environment conducive to learning and achievement.
