Houston has no shortage of Black excellence when it comes to business.

For decades, places like Frenchy’s Chicken, Lucille’s and The Breakfast Klub have anchored the city’s food and cultural scene, becoming not only neighborhood staples but destinations for visitors who want a taste of Houston’s soul.

These legacy businesses are important; they’ve paved the way, held doors open and shown what longevity can look like in a constantly evolving city.

Every year, new businesses open in Houston and for Black entrepreneurs, standing out in that sea of competition isn’t easy. Many don’t have access to the same marketing budgets, mainstream press or institutional support that other businesses can rely on.

As a result, countless gems, restaurants, spas, hotels, lounges and more struggle to be seen, even when what they’re offering is unique, high-quality and rooted in community.

Visibility matters. For Black-owned businesses, especially those that are newly established, getting foot traffic in the door early can be the difference between surviving the first few years or closing before people even know they exist. Shining a light on these businesses is about helping to ensure they stay, thrive and eventually become the next generation of legacy names we point to in the future.

In the last couple of years, Houston has welcomed an exciting wave of Black-owned businesses that are reimagining what’s possible in food, beauty, wellness and hospitality.

So while we’ll always love our classics, it’s equally important to make room for these newer voices at the table. Here are five of Houston’s newest Black-owned businesses that deserve your attention and support.
