Emojis have become the shorthand of modern communication: Little icons that capture feelings, ideas and even entire places.
Yet, when scrolling through the emoji keyboard, Houstonians might feel a void. For a city as vibrant and sprawling as Houston, the lack of uniquely H-Town symbols is striking.
Imagine opening your phone and finding an emoji for the Astrodome or a steaming bowl of pho from Bellaire Boulevard.
Until then, we’ll dream. Here are five Houston landmarks that deserve their own emojis.
1. The Astrodome

The “Eighth Wonder of the World” would be an instant emoji classic. Opened in 1965, the Astrodome was the world’s first domed sports stadium and quickly became a symbol of Houston’s big, bold identity. Its space-age design, massive roof and role in hosting everything from Astros baseball to Evel Knievel stunts make it more than a relic. It’s an icon.
Emoji potential? Picture a tiny silver dome with a bold outline, a nod to both nostalgia and innovation. If New York gets the Statue of Liberty, Houston deserves the Astrodome.
2. The “Be Someone” graffiti bridge

Few things scream “Houston” like the “Be Someone” bridge. Painted across a Union Pacific railroad overpass downtown, the message has become both a rallying cry and a photo backdrop. Despite frequent paint-overs, the words always return, keeping the spirit alive.
Imagine a graffiti-style emoji: Block letters, bright blue spray paint, maybe even on a gray metal beam. It would capture Houston’s grassroots creativity and resilience: Short, punchy and undeniably cool.
3. NASA’s Mission Control
Houston, we have a problem. There’s no emoji for the Johnson Space Center. The city’s identity is tied to space exploration, from the Apollo missions to today’s work with commercial spaceflight. Tourists still flock to see the original Mission Control room, where engineers once guided astronauts to the moon.
A Mission Control emoji could feature a rocket blasting off with a small star backdrop or even a headset icon with the word “Houston” tucked inside. It would instantly signal space history, innovation and that famous phrase heard around the world.
4. The Water Wall

If you’ve ever stood at the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park, you know its power. The semi-circular wall of cascading water soars 64 feet high, offering one of the most photogenic spots in the city. Engagement photos, quinceañeras, graduation shoots, the Waterwall is practically Houston’s unofficial backdrop.
An emoji for the Water Wall could be simple but striking: Blue arcs of falling water curving around a silver outline. Think of it as a cooling splash on your keyboard, a little reminder of calm amid Houston’s hustle.
5. The Rodeo Cowboy
Yes, there’s already a cowboy emoji, but it doesn’t capture Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo energy. Each spring, the city transforms into rodeo central with concerts, cookoffs, trail rides and championship bull riding. It’s the biggest event of the year, drawing millions of visitors to the world’s largest livestock exhibition.
A rodeo-specific emoji could show a cowboy on a bucking bull or horse, lasso in hand. It would celebrate Houston’s blend of Texan tradition and modern spectacle, all in one tiny icon.
Why emojis matter
Emojis aren’t just playful symbols; they’re cultural markers. Los Angeles gets a palm tree, New York has its skyscrapers and Paris beams with the Eiffel Tower. Houston deserves its own place in that lexicon. These emojis would not just be fun to use, but they would be recognition of Houston’s history, creativity and identity.
Until Apple or Unicode gives us the Astrodome and Waterwall, Houstonians will keep hacking together strings of rockets, cowboy hats and waterfalls to show hometown pride. But someday soon, your keyboard might finally speak Houston fluently.
