As I look ahead to 2026, I’m filled with both resolve and excitement about where The Defender is headed. Journalism is changing in real time, and while I’m proudly old school at heart, I also know one undeniable truth: Adapt or get left behind. Navigating the complexities of AI will be a major focus for us—not as blind adopters, but as critical thinkers committed to ethics, accuracy, and protecting Black voices in a rapidly evolving digital space.

At the same time, 2026 will demand courage. This administration is sure to bring its share of madness, and silence is not an option. The Defender will continue to be a vocal fighter—calling out injustice, defending our communities, and speaking truth even when it’s uncomfortable. We will also double down on rallying our people to the polls, reminding them that their voices matter, their votes matter, and disengagement is exactly what those in power count on.

On a personal level, I’m carrying forward what sustained me in 2025 – joy. I was intentional about finding joy in everyday moments, and that practice saved me. In 2026, my new word is intentionality – being deliberate about where I show up, what I say yes to, how I lead, and how I protect my peace while still doing the work that matters.
