Today, we recognize the powerful legacy of the Black Press — On March 16, 1827, a minister, The Rev. Samuel Cornish, and a journalist, John Russwurm, founded the first Black newspaper, Freedom’s Journal. The Black Press has long been a voice for our community, telling our stories with truth and integrity when others would not – especially during these times.
We encourage you to support Black-owned newspapers like the Houston Defender Network celebrating 95 years.
