A sixth grader in Birmingham, Alabama took it upon himself to write a will “just in case” he dies in a school shooting. Man, times really have changed.
When I was in middle school, the only drills we had were fire drills. Nowadays, students have to prep for active shooters, something no one should have to do, especially children. But with school shootings almost guaranteed to happen now, kids are prepping in ways that we couldn’t have imagined.
CBS affiliate WIAT reported that for Javon Davies, a sixth grader in Birmingham, Alabama, he decided to write a will with his best friend Cameron after hearing that his middle school received a threat.
“Just in case, like, something happened to one of us ‘cus, like, some kids they get rowdy and it might end up making somebody get shot or something,” he said.
In his will, he lists a Playstation 4, controllers, TV, Xbox and even his cat to all go to Cameron. When Javon’s mother, Mariama Davies, learned about the will, she was understandably upset about it. Who wants their kid to be thinking about dying when they’re in school?
“I could not believe it, I’m like, you know, my child, he’s in the sixth grade, this is something he should not be thinking about,” she said.
But that’s the country that we live in now. The Parkland mass shooting on Feb. 14 is finally waking people up to the fact that gun control should be the country’s number one priority right now. And on Mar. 7, another shooting happened at Huffman High School in Javon’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama that claimed the life of Courtlin Arrington.
It’s unfortunate that such a young child is thinking about who he should give all of his things away to, and this, again, weighs heavy on his mother.
“It’s really hard because he’s so young. He just shouldn’t have to go through that period, because, for what? He’s in sixth grade. You have a lot ahead of you, and these things going on, you shouldn’t have to worry about, go through or even think about,” she said.
Javon’s note also included a warm thanks to his family, people who he loves very much and appreciates.
“Dear family, I love you all. You gave me the clothes on my back and you stuck with me all the time. Love, Javon,” he wrote.
But all in all, he’s not letting a cloud of death overcome him. He believes that he will be safe, he just wants to be prepared “just in case.”
“I know it’s going to be ok because God got me in his hands,” he said.
