If 2024 was the year of elevated expectations on the Houston sports scene, 2025 will be the breakthrough year.

The Texans and Rockets both showed that their years of rebuilding are finally ready to show some returns. The Astros appeared to take a step back in their first season without Dusty Baker, but they bounced back and made the end of the season another interesting one that had us all excited for another AL Pennant run. The University of Houston Cougars cemented their place among the elite in the nation after remaining at the top of the polls for much of the season before making another NCAA Tournament run. And first-year Texas Southern coach Cris Dishman has seemingly given the Tigers’ faithful something to be excited about.

But 2025 must be the year that major expectations are met. That means a return to the postseason for the Rockets, a legit run to AFC dominance for C.J. Stroud and the Texans, a deeper-than-expected run through the NCAA Tournament for the Coogs and a rise to the top of the SWAC West for Dishman and the Tigers.

We will see how it plays out. But it figures to be a memorable 2025 for Houston sports teams, however it goes.
