A free Funday in the Park is 4 p.m. Friday, June 16, at Hunters Glen Park, 1340 Independence Blvd. On Saturday, June 17, there will be three events. A Festival Under the Stars is from 4-11 p.m. at Hunters Glen Park and features R&B funk band Lakeside and flutist Althea Rene in concert. A “One Mile of Smiles” Parade begins at 7 p.m. at Texas Parkway (FM 2234) and Court Road. A free Battle of the Bands begins immediately after the parade at Hunters Glen Park.   • The play “In All Thy Getting: The Forgotten Story of Freedmen’s Town,” written by Houston native Holly Charles, comes to the Ensemble Theatre, 3535 Main St. Performances are Friday, June 16 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, June 17 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, June 18 at 8 p.m. The play explores the lives of a young couple who are caregivers to the husband’s grandmother.   • The Annual Acres Homes Juneteenth Parade hosted by Mayor Sylvester Turner will be held Saturday, June 17, at 10 a.m. It will start at the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center, 6719 W. Montgomery, head north on W. Montgomery, turn left on Dolly Wright and end at Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1620 Dolly Wright. The parade will feature marching bands, dancers, schools, cars and motorcycles, floats, horses and more.
  • The Annual Juneteenth Scholarship Gala sponsored by Broken Chains Awareness Development Group is Saturday, June 17 at 6 p.m. at The Shrine Cultural Center, 5309 Martin Luther King Blvd. Info: brokenchainsadg.com
  • Galveston celebrates Juneteenth with a parade on Saturday, June 17, at 7 p.m. at 17th and Strand. The Galveston Juneteenth Coalition hosts the 38th annual Al Edwards Emancipation Proclamation Reading and Prayer Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on June 19 at the Ashton Villa, 2328 Broadway. A Juneteenth celebration is June 19 at 1 p.m. at Jack Johnson Park, 2601 Avenue M. Reedy Chapel A.M.E. Church will commemorate the first known Juneteenth celebration at 6 p.m. on June 19 with its annual march from the steps of the Old Galveston County Courthouse to the church at 2015 Broadway Ave. Info: www.galveston.com
  • A Gulf Coast Juneteenth blues & Creole music festival is Monday, June 19 at 7 p.m. at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park. It features singer and civil rights activist Mavis Staples, Milton Hopkins & the Hit City Blues Band and J Paul Jr. & the Zydeco NuBreedz.
