Patrick Jefferson watched his Lamar High School boys’ track and field squad dominate the field at the 2018 HISD district meet held at Barnett Stadium.
The Texans more than doubled the 91 points of runner-up Westbury and finished with a whopping 230 points to lap the field.
“I was impressed with our hurdler (Sheilden Orelien),” said Jefferson, now in his second year as head boys track coach.
Orelien won the District 18-6A 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.55 seconds. The senior came back and easily won the 300-meter hurdles in 40.95 seconds.
The Lamar boys placed first in 12 different events.
“To sweep the 100-meter dash like we did is really hard to do,” Jefferson said. “That event is one of the most hotly-contested races each year and for us to go 1-2-3 with Ashton, Zane and Alex is a big surprise.”
Lamar’s Ashton O’Conner won the 100-meter dash gold medal with a time of 10.99 seconds. Zane Knipe placed second and took home the silver medal in 11.20 seconds while Alex Hogan was awarded the bronze with a clocking of 11.30 seconds.
The Westside boys were third in the team standings with 85 points.
Lamar was also dominant in the girls’ division with 199 points to outdistance Bellaire (150) for the team title.
Mia Moffett was a double winner for Lamar in the shot put (33-7.00) and discus (97-07). Joi Morgan (100) and Maia Coleman (300) claimed gold in the hurdles. Kaylin Guillory won the triple jump (34-03.00).
