In the absence of the Texas Education Agency’s official school ratings, blocked by a Travis County judge’s temporary restraining order, HISD released its own projected and preliminary accountability ratings.

With HISD’s formulation for its 256 schools, which uses student achievement, school progress, and closing achievement gaps as parameters:

  • the number of schools rated “A” or “B” increased from 93 to 170
  • the number of schools graded a “D” or “F” dropped from 121 to 41
  • In 2023, only 11 NES schools received “A” or “B” ratings, but in this year’s ratings, 53 NES campuses earned an “A” or “B” rating, ie. a 480% increase
  • More than half the schools had their TEA-issued accountability rating go up by one or more letter grades
  • 87 schools had no change in their rating
  • 29 schools saw their scores deteriorate

Fleming Middle School, which follows HISD Superintendent Mike Miles’ controversial New Education System, is now in its second year of the NES curriculum. The school went from an “F” rating (53 points) to a “B” rating (81 points) this year, per HISD’s accountability ratings. Fleming MS Principal Devil Adams and his staff said the NES school structure is working.
