Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Houstonian Jalen Hurts is lending a helping hand to his hometown community after the tragic shooting death of North Shore senior Jarvon Coles.

Hurts, a Houston native and product of Channelview, has paid for the funeral expenses of Jarvon Coles, according to an NFL.com report. Coles’ funeral was held at The Light of the World Christian Fellowship Church in Humble on Saturday, March 16.

Coles, 18, was a 4.1 GPA student, standout football player, team captain and headed to Lamar University in the fall. He was killed on March 9th when gunfire erupted at a house party he was attending. Police found Coles with a gunshot wound to the chest and rushed him to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Though Hurts attended rival Channelview, where his father, Averion Hurts, was the head football coach, he wanted to support Coles’ loved ones in their time of grief. The 25-year-old star quarterback sent a video message to the family and committed to covering the funeral costs.

On Saturday, hundreds gathered to pay their respects at Coles’ funeral held at The Light of the World Christian Fellowship Church. In addition to Hurts’ tribute, other public figures also honored the life of the beloved student cut tragically short by gun violence.

The senseless killing has shaken the tight-knit Houston community. Hurts’ compassionate act provides a glimmer of light during the family’s darkest hours as they mourn the tremendous loss of the young man’s bright future.

On March 9, deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were called to a rental home on Fieldwick Lane in Humble due to concerns about underage drinking, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said partygoers told them a young man was in the backyard having a seizure, the HCSO said.

While they performed CPR on the male, they realized that he had been shot in the chest, the station reported.

The young man, later identified by the HCSO as Coles, was rushed to a local hospital where he died shortly after, authorities said.

The police investigation into his murder is still ongoing.
