Jonathan Majors, recently convicted of domestic assault and harassment, was awarded the Perseverance Award at the Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards in Beverly Hills. This honor comes just six months after his legal troubles.

Majors, visibly emotional, accepted the award from Iyanla Vanzant, acknowledging his imperfections and shortcomings. The audience, led by Hollywood Unlocked founder Jason Lee, gave him a standing ovation.

Onstage at the awards ceremony, Majors was tearful while reflecting on the experience.

โ€œPerseverance means what?โ€ an emotional Majors said. โ€œPerseverance means persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay. And the God I serve has put me in a position where Iโ€™ve had to embody that word more than I wished or wanted.โ€

โ€œWe live in a world where men, Black men in particular, are propped up as either superheroes or supervillains,” he continued. “But Iโ€™ve come to realize, me, personally, I ainโ€™t none of that. โ€ฆ Iโ€™m just that guy whose faith has been tested. It has been strengthened by this testimony.โ€

Despite denying allegations throughout his 19-day trial, Majors was sentenced in April to a year of domestic violence counseling, including a 52-week program in Los Angeles. On stage, he reflected on the meaning of perseverance and how his faith has been tested.

The actor’s career took a significant hit following his conviction. He was dropped from future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects and lost other roles. However, he recently landed the lead in Martin Villeneuve’s “Merciless,” his first new project since the conviction.

โ€œThere will be moments in your life where things get dark, and I mean really dark. โ€ฆ Iโ€™ve seen that darkness in myself,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™ve sat in that pitch black and what Iโ€™ve learned is that when you catch a glimpse of light, you run as hard and as fast as you can towards it. And I will never take that light for granted again.โ€

Majors expressed gratitude for support during his difficult times, mentioning family members including his girlfriend Meagan Good. He also thanked industry figures like Will Smith, Tyler Perry, David Oyelowo, and filmmakers Deon and Roxane Taylor for their support.

โ€œLight for me has come in a couple of ways: in the midnight texts from our brother Will Smith. Tyler Perry breathed life into me, just supporting and loving on people the way he does,โ€ he said.

The award and Majors’ speech highlight the complex dynamics of Hollywood’s approach to personal controversies and the concept of redemption in the entertainment industry.
