Harris County Commissioners Court on Tuesday awarded a $161,674 contract to a firm that will build sidewalks and pedestrian ramps near seven schools selected in Precinct One’s Safe Routes to School Program.
Precinct One started the program last year to provide safety to students and parents walking to school in four districts – Houston, Spring, Aldine and Pasadena.
“Ensuring that students get to and from schools safely is a top-priority for every district,” Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis said. “I am proud to assist these four districts in adding another layer of protection for these precious youth.”
Aranda Brothers Construction Co. will build sidewalks around six Houston Independent School District campuses – Kandy Stripe Academy, Cullen Middle, Welch Middle, Parker Elementary, Young Elementary and Barbara Jordan High. Greenspoint Elementary in Aldine ISD also will get sidewalks.
Twenty-three schools are scheduled for sidewalk work under the program. In the first phase, construction has started on sidewalks for 16 schools. The final phase covers the seven schools approved Tuesday.
In another construction project, sidewalk and streetscape improvements funded by Precinct One have been completed on McNee Street between Main and Kirby near NRG Park.
