It doesn’t take long for students to lose some of the academic progress they have made during the school year by sitting idle over the summer, so HISD is challenging students to use the power of reading to combat the dreaded “summer slide.”
Below are a number of ways to access thousands of books absolutely free through the district’s Summer Reading Program.
”It’s been proven through research, experience, and time that students lose at least three months of learning during the summer if they don’t engage in reading over the summer break,” said HISD’s Library Media Services Manager Janice Newsum.
Once again, HISD is teaming up with the Houston Public Library and myON, a digital library containing more than 5,000 free books. The district is challenging students to read a minimum of five books during the summer and record them in a Summer Reading Log. In the fall, students take their completed reading log to their school librarian or teacher to get rewards.
HOUSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY ACCESS
In person: Every HISD student ID doubles as a library card at the Houston Public Library (HPL). Younger students without a student ID were given a Learning Link card by their school.
Online: Visit www.HoustonISD.org/LearningLink to learn how to log in with your student ID for free, 24/7 digital access.
HPL, Harris County Public Library, and Bellaire City Library participate in the Texas Summer Reading Program, which means that students can get credit for books they read in both the public library program and HISD’s. Check with your local library branch for details.
HISD DIGITAL LIBRARY AND MYON ACCESS
Find reading resources for all students at www.HoustonISD.org/SummerReading. Elementary and middle school students also have access to more than 5,000 books at myON. Visit www.about.myon.com/HISD for log-in instructions.
Read at least 10 books on myON between May 22 and Sept. 1 and be entered in a drawing to win an iPad mini. Nationally, students who spend the most time reading will win an iPad mini, and two runners-up will win $100 gift cards.
