Founder of Superb Speakers and Consultants Joyce Scott spoke to a large crowd of small business owners on how life experiences taught her how to not only obtain clients, but how to keep them.

โ€œPeople do business with people they like,โ€ said Scott. โ€œYou build relationships making clients look good.โ€

Scott stressed that in order to be successful and gain big contracts, business owners must build a winning team by seeking out people who excel in areas they are lacking.

โ€œI wanted to work with smarter people,โ€ said Scott. โ€œI surround myself with the best of the world.โ€

The presentation โ€” which had the highest workshop turnout to date โ€” resonated with some attendees on how they should conduct their own businesses.

โ€œOld school with new school still works. The basics of selling are still there,โ€ said workshop attendee Hailey Stevens, who owns a small vista printer and photo ID systems shop. โ€œWe are trying to be more proactive with our business and, like [Scott] says, not wait for business to come to us.โ€

The free monthly event is held on the first Wednesday of each month. Topics covered vary and are targeted to provide relevant information and assistance to minority- and women-owned companies interested in doing business with the district.
