Tragedy has unfortunately struck the North Shore football program after one of the Mustangs’ players was shot and killed early Saturday morning.
Police were called to a home in the Humble area where a large house party was taking place and they found 18-year-old Jarvon Coles, who appeared to be having a seizure. It turns out he had been shot in the chest.
EMS arrived and took Coles to a hospital in the area where he was pronounced dead not long after arriving.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it appears that the shooter or shooters “intentionally shot” in the direction of the house party from about a block away. He said the suspects left the scene in a vehicle.
Coles was a senior linebacker for the Mustangs and a two-time all-district player. He was planning to play college football at Lamar.
Coles’ grandfather and guardian, Braxton Coles, spoke with KHOU 11 and told them his grandson was not just a great football player, but he also carried a 4.1 GPA and had been accepted into 15 colleges.
“Parents, please keep your kids close. No matter how hard you try, you can’t save them,” Braxton Coles said to KHOU.
DaMeko Williams, who is a teammate of Coles, said he woke up to the news and started crying.
“Jarvon was a great human being, he was a great person, always had a smile on his face, never see him getting into anything bad, or having any type of conflict with anyone,” he said.
Williams said Coles got along with everyone and was always checking to make sure his friends were doing well.
“He was like I say, a great person on and off the field, he was very smart,” he said.
Authorities said they received an initial welfare check call on a concern of underage drinking at the party. Shortly after, a second call reported a person passed out in the front yard.
The sheriff’s office said initially, it was believed that the victim had passed out in the front yard of the home.
