Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is facing a difficult battle after revealing she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The longtime Democratic congresswoman released a statement on Sunday confirming the diagnosis and warning constituents that her treatment regimen may force her to be “occasionally absent” from legislative duties on Capitol Hill.

“My doctors have confirmed my diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. I am currently undergoing treatment to battle this disease that impacts tens of thousands of Americans every year,” the 15-term representative of Houston’s 18th District said. “The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand in faith that God will strengthen me.”

Despite the health challenges, Jackson Lee, 74, vowed to remain engaged on critical issues impacting her district and the nation.

“I am committed to working with House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on legislation that is critical for the prosperity and security of the American people,” she stated.

However, the congresswoman acknowledged her cancer treatments could occasionally cause her to miss votes. She recently reintroduced the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a top priority for the Congressional Black Caucus member.

Jackson Lee expressed confidence that her medical team has devised the “best possible plan” targeted to her specific condition.

“By God’s grace, I will be back at full strength soon,” she stated with resolute optimism.

The news comes after Jackson Lee, who represents Texas’ 18th district, fended off a primary challenge earlier this year, securing 60% of the vote and after Jackson Lee lost a bid for Houston’s mayor’s office late last year.

As she prepares for a difficult treatment regimen, Jackson Lee assured her constituents that her office will maintain vital services throughout her periodic absences from Washington.

Still Jackson Lee, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and 30-year veteran serving in Congress, is maintaining a faithful outlook despite the daunting diagnosis.

“The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand in faith that God will strengthen me,” she said.
