Understanding the Importance of Voting
Voters, particularly those between 18 and 24, represent nearly 15% of Texas’ adult population, according to 2023 census data. However, voter turnout among this group has historically lagged, with only 49% of registered young voters participating in the 2022 midterms. For comparison, 86% of voters aged 65 and older cast their ballots during the same period.
This disparity highlights the need for young Black voters to recognize their collective power. By voting, you influence decisions on issues that directly impact your lifeโsuch as education, healthcare, housing, and criminal justice. The older generation’s priorities may not align with yours, making it even more vital that young people step up and vote.
How to Register to Vote in Texas
Before you can vote, you must be registered. Texas has strict registration laws, so it’s important to understand the requirements and process.
Eligibility Requirements:
- You must be a U.S. citizen.
- You must reside in the county where youโre registering.
- You must be at least 17 years old, 10 months old, and 18 by Election Day.
- You cannot be convicted of a felony (unless your rights have been restored).
Steps to Register:
- Fill Out a Voter Registration Application: You can obtain a voter registration application from your countyโs voter registrarโs office online through the Texas Secretary of Stateโs website or at many post offices, libraries, and government offices.
- Submit the Application: You can submit your completed application at your countyโs voter registrar’s office or mail it in. The application must be postmarked by October 7, 2024, to be eligible to vote in the upcoming election.
- Check Your Registration Status: After submitting your application, it is crucial to confirm that you are registered. You can verify your registration status online through the Texas Secretary of Stateโs website using your Texas driverโs license number, name, and date of birth.
Voting in Person: What to Bring
Texas requires voters to present one of seven forms of approved photo identification when voting in person. These include:
- A state driverโs license (issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety)
- A Texas election identification certificate (issued by DPS)
- A Texas personal identification card (issued by DPS)
- A Texas license to carry a handgun (issued by DPS)
- A U.S. military ID card with a personal photo
- A U.S. citizenship certificate with a personal photo
- A U.S. passport
If you do not have an ID, you can still vote by signing a Reasonable Impediment Declaration and providing supporting documentation, such as a utility bill or bank statement with your name and address.
Voting by Mail: How to Apply
Voting by mail is an option for voters who will be away from their county on Election Day, are sick or disabled, are 65 years of age or older, or are confined in jail but otherwise eligible.
Steps to Vote by Mail:
- Request a Mail-in Ballot: You must apply for a mail-in ballot by October 25, 2024. Applications can be submitted by mail, fax, or email, but they must be received (not just postmarked) by this deadline.
- Complete Your Ballot: Once you receive your mail-in ballot, carefully follow the instructions to complete it. Be sure to sign the envelope as required.
- Return Your Ballot: Your completed ballot must be returned by mail or delivered in person to your countyโs elections office by November 5, 2024, or postmarked by Election Day and received by November 6, 2024.
