The former Virginia Tech star and Newport News native confirmed to The Virginian-Pilot that he has formally interviewed for Norfolk Stateโ€™s vacant head coaching job. Vick revealed that Norfolk State was the first to reach out, and conversations with university president Javaune Adams-Gaston and athletic director Melody Webb have progressed. He expects a final decision โ€œsoonโ€ and plans to build a staff of seasoned coaching veterans to help elevate the Spartans’ program.

This would mark Vickโ€™s first collegiate coaching opportunity, though heโ€™s no stranger to leadership. After revolutionizing the quarterback position at Virginia Techโ€”where he earned 1999 Big East Rookie and Offensive Player of the Year honorsโ€”Vick went on to a storied NFL career. In recent years, heโ€™s honed his football mind as a Fox Sports analyst, delivering NFL commentary on pregame broadcasts.

While Sacramento State is also reportedly in the mix, Vickโ€™s ties to Virginia and the opportunity to make history at Norfolk State could be too perfect a match to pass up.

โ€œI know how to lead and I know what it takes,โ€ Vick said.
