Cw Woods’ Emerald Carter ends dry spell

Emerald Carter had a moment to savor at the UIL Class 6A area track and field meet held at HISD’s Barnett Stadium.

The event featured athletes from districts 17 and 18 and determined who would earn a spot at this weekend’s Region III-6A meet at Turner Stadium in Humble with an appearance at the state meet on the line.

Carter, of Cypress Woods High School, was not one of the favorites in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles.

Yet when the race was completed Carter placed first in a time of 45.12 seconds to take home the gold medal. Jamaiah Satra of Jersey Village (45.15) was a close second and Maia Coleman of Lamar (46.48) won the bronze medal.

“It’s been awhile since I’ve been on the winner’s stand so I’m delighted,” Carter said. “I’ve been working for this moment and at times it looked like I was never going to get here. It feels very gratifying.”

Carter (14.87 seconds) placed second to Joi Morgan of Houston Lamar (14.53) in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles.

“All-in-all it was a good day,” she said.

The 2018 Region III-6A and 5A meets in Humble will take place simultaneously Friday and Saturday at Turner Stadium. Saturday’s running finals begin at 6 p.m.
