Kashmere High School senior wide receiver/defensive back Charles Ward was a man on a mission in the Rams 22-10 comeback victory over Booker T. Washington. After the Rams were shut out in the first half, Ward pushed his team back to victory on both sides of the line of scrimmage. On the offensive side, he caught two touchdowns that put Kashmere up 14-10 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter he helped close out the game with a key interception.
Kashmere head football coach James Laster expressed his pride in Ward’s standout performance against Booker T. “[Ward’s] a four-year starter for us who had to deal with a whole lot of adversity that he was able to put behind him. He is a special kind of kid that we were looking forward to having a breakout game like he did tonight.”
The Defender spoke with after his breakout game against Washington to discuss his style of play and key plays in the game.
Defender: How would you describe your style of play on the field?
Ward:I’m just a grinder. I grind hard at practice and I grind every day.
Defender: Walk us through the two touchdown catches you had against Washington.
Ward:In the first half we were losing, but I knew we would come back. When we came in the second half, I knew I could grind with the team behind me, we went in and scored and won as the result.
Defender: What about the game-changing interception in the fourth quarter?
Ward:I knew we could get it. With Ty’colbiy and Dee they grind hard and were stopping them. When they threw it, I knew I could get it so I jumped up and got it.
