The Deer Park High School softball and baseball teams are trying to establish a precedent while enjoying enormous success in the spring of 2017.

The mere thought of teams from the same school qualifying for their respective state tournaments within a week of one another is highly unlikely. Or is it?

Deer Park softball entered the season with a goal of making its fourth trip to the state tournament since 2012. The Deer won state titles in 2012 and 2014 and have advanced to the Region III-6A finals again this year.

With a regional semifinal series win over Ridge Point, the Deer Park baseball team will make its second consecutive trip to the regional finals.

The state’s No. 1-ranked Class 6A team fell to Langham Creek with a berth in the state tournament on the line a year ago.

A 4-3 victory (10 innings) over Katy in game one of a best-of-three regional championship series at the University of Houston brought the Deer within one win of the 2017 state softball tournament.

Sara Vanderford’s RBI double in the bottom of the 10th proved to be the game winner.

Peyton Sherlin tossed a one-hit shutout to lead Deer Park past Ridge Point 7-0 in game one of a best-of-three regional baseball semifinal series at Schroeder Park on the UH campus. Another Deer Park win means a repeat trip to the regional finals.

Following both games last Friday a graduation ceremony was held on Cougar Field for the 17 Deer Park baseball (12) and softball (5) seniors.

Those same seniors could be celebrating again soon.
