After a tough 2023 season that saw Katy Paetow finish 8th in 6A Region III District 19 with only two wins, the team is determined to flip the script in 2024.

The major reason behind the ambition is senior defensive standout Deyjhon Pettaway, who is bringing leadership, talent, and a relentless work ethic to help turn around the program.

Pettaway’s influence has already been felt this season. After a season-opening loss to Langham Creek, Katy Paetow rebounded with a crucial win against Spring DeKaney, showing signs that this year’s squad is ready for a better outcome. Pettaway, known for his ability to make game-changing plays from the secondary, is committed to helping his team build on that momentum.

A key reason for Pettaway’s development as a player is his dedication to studying the game. Drawing inspiration from both collegiate and professional players, Pettaway closely watches Tyreek Chappell’s performances at the college level and the legendary Ed Reed at the professional level. His dedication to learning is one of the traits that sets Pettaway apart, as he looks to blend his natural speed and instinct with refined technique.

“I watch Tyreek Chappell from Texas A&M because the way he plays defensive back is similar to how I play,” said Pettaway. “He is quick and can lock up anybody at nickel or corner. I also like watching older safeties like Ed Reed because they played with more grit and physicality.”

Pettaway’s commitment to improvement didn’t stop in the offseason. He worked out with local standout Jacory 1way, preparing himself physically and mentally for his senior season.

“Jacory 1way has helped me change not only my game but also the mindset to be DB1 no matter where I’m at or who I’m going against. He takes players’ abilities and tweaks them with the techniques he teaches and transforms their mindsets to dominate under any circumstances,” said Pettaway.

Along with his father’s advice—reminding him that he could accomplish anything—Pettaway has embraced both the challenges and the opportunities ahead of him. One of the biggest adversities he’s faced has been overcoming the fear of failure, with some critics focusing only on his speed and overlooking his technique. Pettaway, however, has proven that he can excel in all aspects of the game.

“I have to just keep playing. When offenses run away from me, it allows for my other teammates to make plays,” said Pettaway.

Ranked as the No. 140 player nationally, the No. 14 cornerback, and the No. 17 player in Texas by Rivals.com, Pettaway is one of the most highly regarded defensive backs in the state. His coverage skills and ability to blanket wide receivers have earned him recognition on the Touchdown Club of Houston’s High School Pre-Season Team, where he was one of four Katy-area players honored.

“To be recognized was an honor and all glory to God. I’ve worked hard and those accolades are expected when I’ve put the work in,” said Pettaway.

Pettaway’s future is bright as he heads to Texas A&M next season, having selected the Aggies over Ole Miss and Oklahoma. Pettaway cited Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko’s defensive expertise as a key reason for his decision. Elko along with the academic opportunities at Texas A&M and the experience of playing at Kyle Field are what pushed Texas A&M over the top.

“Coach Elko is a mastermind at this defense stuff,” said Pettaway. “The Aggie degree will also have me set forever in life, and the environment in that stadium is the closest thing to NFL stadiums preparing me for the big lights on Sundays.”

As Pettaway takes the field for Katy Paetow, he continues to be a leader for his teammates, helping to guide a program looking to climb from the bottom of the standings. Despite the challenges he’s faced—including teams avoiding his side of the field—he remains a crucial part of the team’s defensive success, allowing his teammates to step up and make plays when offenses attempt to work around him.

With the support of his coaches, teammates, and family—including his cousin, former Langham Creek standout Jaquaize Pettaway, who is now at the University of Oklahoma—Deyjhon Pettaway is poised to leave a lasting legacy at Katy Paetow. A three-year varsity letterman, Pettaway’s leadership and playmaking ability could be the key to a winning season for Katy Paetow in 2024, marking a significant turnaround for the program.
