Lamar draws much of the attention when the conversation comes to District 18-6A football. Heights and Bellaire have had their moments. Yet one school is rarely mentioned.
Westside High School is squarely in the playoff chase following a 37-0 victory over Chavez at Barnett Stadium. The Wolves improved to 2-1 in district play with remaining games against Heights (Oct. 28), Sam Houston (Nov. 4) and Bellaire (Nov. 11).
The Wolves have a balanced offense with Christian Rogers and A.J. Parks doing much of the heavy lifting in the rushing game. Rogers had 94 yards on 12 carries, including a four-yard TD run against Chavez. Parks added 33 rushing yards and a one-yard scoring run.
Jaylyn Williams is a dual threat with a six-yard TD run and a 20-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Dave Nelson. Kerry Smith caught a 22-yard TD pass from Nelson who also completed a two-point conversion throw to Daniel Mendoza.
Nelson completed 12-of-16 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Williams caught six passes for 77 yards.
The Wolves’ defense tossed a shutout against Chavez thanks to a four-interception effort led by Thad.
