In the aftermath of the destruction dealt to the Texas Gulf Coast by Hurricane Harvey, Port Arthur Memorial rallied from a 10-point deficit to claim the school’s first Class 5A boys’ state high school basketball championship with a 75-69 victory over Northwest. Katy Tompkins made history with its first appearance at the boys’ Class 6A state basketball tournament following a win over Alief Taylor in the regional championship game. The Tompkins boys lost to Allen 49-47. Earlier in the playoffs, Sam Houston MSTC eliminated the defending Class 6A state champions Cypress Falls. Sam Houston fell to Alief Taylor in the regional semifinals.
