In the ever-evolving landscape of high school football, Houston Independent School District (HISD) has long been recognized for nurturing raw talent. Despite this, the district’s players have often struggled to gain visibility due to limited crowds and heightened competition from suburban schools with superior facilities. However, the recent performances of Camben Emanuel and Dontreal “Paco” Fisher have proven there are some players in HISD whose athleticism is comparable to those in more competitive districts.
Historically, HISD has been home to some of Texas’ football legends. Mike Singletary, for example, was a star defensive player at Worthing High School during the 1970s before becoming a Hall of Famer with the Chicago Bears. Bobby Taylor, another notable figure, started his career at Westbury High School, eventually making a mark in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks.

Yet, as suburban schools have proliferated with advanced facilities and larger audiences, HISD schools have faced challenges in showcasing their talent on a grand stage. The struggle to fill rosters and attract significant attention has been evident, raising questions about how HISD talent would fare against stronger non-HISD teams.
This skepticism was put to rest recently as Emanuel and Fisher, former James Madison High School teammates, made waves after transferring to Fort Bend Hightower High School. Their performance in Hightower’s 2024 season opener against Clear Falls High School was promising as Emanuel connected with Fisher on two touchdown passes.
Emanuel and Fisher, who had previously led the Madison Marlins to a second-place finish behind Galveston Ball in 5A-1 Region III District 9, showcased a connection and skill set that dared to challenge the notion that HISD athletes were unable to compete against other athletes in more competitive districts.
“Paco and I have a lot of chemistry, playing the whole year at Madison. And then transferring over to Hightower, we’ve built that chemistry. I have a lot of trust in Paco, so I know if I put the ball out there, he’s going to go get it, and that’s what I did today,” said Emanuel.

“I’m confident in my game,” said Fisher. “When I see the ball in the air I’m going to go get it no matter who is covering me, from 5A to 6A football. I still feel like I’m difficult to cover.”
Last season while at Madison, Fisher emerged as a standout with 82.7 receiving yards per game and 16 total touchdowns. Emanuel, a junior at the time, led the team with 23 passing touchdowns and 11 rushing touchdowns. Their synergy was evident then, and it’s only grown stronger with their move to Hightower.
Emanuel, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound Army commit, linked up with Fisher, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound wide receiver, for two striking touchdowns in Hightower’s 19-14 win over Clear Falls. Their on-field chemistry is undeniable, providing a glimpse into what might be a standout season for the team.
Hightower’s head football coach, Cornelius Anthony, has recognized the unique bond between Emanuel and Fisher but believes their potential is far from fully realized.
“The possibility and the potential is limitless. We just have to get them going and get the jitters out. I know what they can do. I’ve seen what they’re capable of. It’s just a matter of time to where we’ll be firing on all cylinders,” said Anthony.
Last season, Hightower finished second behind Ridge Point in 6A Region III District 20, falling just short of advancing past Summer Creek High School in the playoffs. With Emanuel and Fisher now leading the charge, the team is poised for a promising run again this year.
Both players are driven by the desire to make a deep playoff run and secure a state title, aspirations that now seem within reach. Their journey from HISD to Hightower underscores a broader narrative: talent exists everywhere, and with the right platform and support, it can shine brightly, challenging even the most established programs.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Hightower High School as they aim to make another strong push for a state title during the 2024 football season.
