In a district notorious for powerhouse teams like Katy High School, the Mayde Creek Rams are experiencing an unexpected resurgence this season. With a current record of 3-3 in the competitive 6A Region III District 19, fans are buzzing about a new name: Tobi Haastrup.
The 6-foot-4, 238-pound senior has become a beacon of hope for the Rams, showcasing pure athletic talent in his first-ever varsity season of American football. Despite Mayde Creek’s historical struggles, particularly against teams like Katy and Katy Paetow, Haastrup’s recent breakout has put the school in the spotlight.
Haastrup, a newcomer to the sport, has taken the football world by storm. Following an impressive debut against Fort Bend Travis in Week 1, where he racked up five sacks, whispers around the field quickly transformed into fervent excitement: “Who is that kid?” The answer? A gifted athlete who went from unknown to receiving multiple scholarship offers in just one week.

Hailing from the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria, Haastrup’s journey to this moment is as remarkable as his performance on the field. After moving to the U.S. from London in 2016, he lived in California before settling in Houston with his mother and older sister. His athletic career began with soccer and track, where he recorded impressive personal records: a 10.71 second 100-meter dash, a 21.7 second 200-meter dash, and a shot put distance of 52 feet—all during his sophomore year.
Despite sitting out his junior season due to school transfers, Haastrup was encouraged to try football by his Mayde Creek and summer track coaches.
“I played a few games in seventh grade but stopped and focused on track. My senior year, my coaches told me this might just be a field where God will use me in,” said Haastrup. “They always tell me how He has blessed me with size, speed and strength, all great attributes to use on the football field. They told me to not have regrets after high school and I felt God telling me to go ahead and try the sport so He can use me as His instrument, so I Did.”
His rapid ascension has caught the attention of college scouts, with offers from top programs including LSU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Florida State, Tennessee, and Texas Tech, despite never having attended any football camps.

In Haastrup’s first three games, he racked up nine sacks, eight tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hurries, and six tackles. As a newcomer to the game, Haastrup is dedicated to improving his skills. He studies film of other players, notably looking up to Colin Simmons, who plays at the University of Texas and former Florida State standout Jared Verse, who is now with the Los Angeles Rams.
“I’m still learning,” Haastrup said. “I want to find a school with a great coaching staff and a strong sports medicine program to help me develop as an athlete.”
The Mayde Creek Rams’ new standout has certainly caught the attention of fans, many of whom typically only show up to see the powerhouse teams dominate. This year, the buzz is different. Mayde Creek is no longer just a footnote in the shadow of Katy; they have a diamond in the rough who is just beginning to tap into his immense potential.
As the season progresses, the football community will be watching closely to see how Haastrup’s journey unfolds. With his impressive combination of size, speed, and sheer muscle, he may very well be on the verge of a breakout year that changes the narrative for the Rams and their fans.
