We have all heard the demand from protesters and from some civic-minded citizens to “defund the police”. Some research shows that most citizens do not want to “defund the police” as we know that we need law enforcement in the community. However, with the recent increase in persons who are mentally ill being shot and killed by the police, there seems to be the need for more sensitivity and training for police officers in handling these difficult situations. The general fund budget for HPD is $931M and the total budget is $1.5B. With that much capital on hand, would you support a “reallocation” of funds, not a defund, to form a police unit composed of social workers, counselors and mental health professionals to hopefully de-escalate these types of situations and maybe save some lives?
