It has been a tumultuous year for HISD. After 18 months on the job, Superintendent Richard Carranza resigned to become chancellor of New York City public schools. He later said the district lacked the “stomach” for changes that would boost outcomes for minority and low-income students. The HISD Board unanimously voted to name Chief Academic Officer Grenita Lathan as interim superintendent while trustees searched for a permanent replacement. In October, a board meeting exploded as Trustee Diana Davila led an effort to oust Lathan and hire Abe Saavedra as interim superintendent, angering Black community members. Trustees voted to bring Lathan back and promised harmony. Other issues include the risk of a state takeover due to several chronically low-performing schools.
