The 'don't revoke my black card' trend was all over the X app. It’s inspired by the card game 'Black Card Revoked,' where people confess the habits, opinions, and personality traits that might put into question their acceptance into the larger black culture. Credit: Adobe Stock Images

The Black Card. It’s not a credit card, but it holds a whole lot of weight in our community (depending on who you are arguing with).

It’s a symbol of shared experience, of knowing the joy and the undeniable humor of Black people and culture. But like any prestigious membership, there are ways to lose your standing. Don’t worry. We’re not talking about forgetting the side dish for the cookout (don’t do that either).

Here’s the lowdown on the Top 5 ways to get your Black Card revoked:

Don’t know the names of the original Dream Girls Broadway cast

Can’t tell Effie from Deena or Lorell? That’s a bigger problem than you think. “Dreamgirls” is a cornerstone of Black cinema, a story about ambition, betrayal and the cutthroat world of music. We love Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose. Still, we must also give our flowers to the original OG cast members Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, and Jennifer Holliday for their iconic performance. The original production opened at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre on December 20, 1981.

Never watched “Coming to America.”

This Eddie Murphy classic is like a Black cultural baptism. From Akeem’s hilarious fish-out-of-water moments to the barbershop scene that’s quotable scripture, it’s a must-watch. Skipping out on this comedic gem is a major Black Card offense. So, gather your crew, pop some popcorn, and prepare to laugh until your sides hurt.

Don’t know how to play spades

Spades is a game night staple that’s more than just friendly competition. It’s about strategy, talking a little trash talk (but keeping it respectful!), bonding over a shared experience, and not knowing the rules? That’s a Black Card blemish for sure. Find a spades aficionado willing to teach you the ropes (and maybe go easy on the point stealing for the first few rounds). Before you know it, you’ll be schooling newbies yourself and holding your own at the next gathering.

Don’t like Mac and Cheese

Mac and cheese is the ultimate comfort food and an undeniable part of Black Southern cuisine. First, not all mac and cheese is created equal, and Black folk don’t play around with this dish. The ancestors demand excellence in all aspects of this recipe. I think it doesn’t hurt to give it a shot depending on who prepares this food.

Electric Slide Escapades

The beat drops, and ‘Before I Let Go’ by Maze is blaring on the sound system, and everyone’s doing the electric slide. But you’re stuck on the wall like a fly, wishing you knew the moves. This party anthem requires some basic grooving – the two-step, the slide. Not having a single move in your arsenal is a recipe for social awkwardness. Brush up on your skills, find a friendly dance partner, and don’t be afraid to get a little silly. The electric slide is all about having fun and letting loose.
