I remember scrolling through YouTube one day after a rough week and stumbled upon the song “Optimism” by the group Sounds of Blackness. Immediately, I turned up the volume, moved my recliner back, closed my eyes, and repeated the song. I felt a sense of nostalgia, and was transported back to the ’90s, a time, from my perspective and life experiences, that was was much simpler. To me, the lyrics of that song are uplifting and the definition of Black joy.
The idea of Black joy has recently gained traction, partly because the Black history taught in schools now primarily emphasizes suffering and hardship. The challenges and suffering that characterize Black history have been increasingly central to the narrative in recent years.
There is the idea that we see on television and on social media that perpetuates a narrative that obscures the complex and dynamic reality of Black life portrayals that frequently highlight incidents of injustice and violence.
But Black Joy does not attempt to mask the challenges of being Black. Rather, it is an appeal for moderation—an understanding that the Black story is about adversity and success. It is a claim that happiness and suffering may coexist and that appreciating small moments in life is a way to challenge the idea that suffering never ends.
Black joy doesn’t have to be a lavish celebration. Its foundations are found in simplicity and the recognition of the beauty found in the ordinary. It’s the minor wins that seem modest but have great meaning, the laughter shared among friends, and pride in one’s cultural heritage.
Seeking Black joy is reclaiming one’s identity and asserting one’s agency in directing the course of Black lives. It’s an admission that happiness is a natural state woven into the fundamental fabric of life rather than depending on difficulties being resolved. Black people who rediscover joy affirm their humanity and refuse to let their struggles define them.
So let’s look at ways to embrace Black joy in ordinary situations in the spirit of simplicity and perseverance.
-
Cultivating Self-Love: At the heart of Black joy lies the profound act of self-love. Amid societal pressures and external expectations, embracing one’s identity and recognizing the beauty within is revolutionary. Whether it’s reveling in the texture of natural hair or appreciating the melanin that graces the skin, finding joy begins with self-affirmation.
-
Connecting with Community: The strength of the Black community lies in its unity. Sharing moments of joy with friends, family, and community fosters a sense of belonging and solidarity. From block parties to cultural celebrations, communal joy becomes a powerful force transcending individual experiences.
-
Cultural Expression and Creativity: In their various forms, the arts have long been conduits for Black joy. From music and dance to literature and visual arts, cultural expression becomes a means of storytelling and preserving history. Engaging in creative pursuits provides an avenue for joyous self-expression and a celebration of heritage.
-
Mindful Living: Taking a moment for mindfulness can be transformative. Whether through meditation, reflection, or simply savoring the flavors of a home-cooked meal, practicing mindfulness opens the door to appreciating the present and finding joy in the smallest details of life.
-
Activism and Advocacy: Engaging in activism and advocacy work becomes a source of empowerment and joy as individuals contribute to shaping a world where future generations can experience even greater happiness.
