Over the past few years, sea moss has become Blackfolks’ new number-one herbal remedy/natural, holistic cure-all for anything from inflammation (the source of a myriad of health issues) to skin issues to lack of vitality and beyond.

For a breakdown of what sea moss is and the benefits it provides, check out this DefenderNetwork.com article.

But for now, here are the five of the most popular uses for sea moss

“Love Potion” Irish Moss Drink

One popular usage for sea moss is using it as a main ingredient for the traditional Jamaican Irish Moss drink. The drink gets its nickname “Love Potion” from the fact that in some countries, sea moss is considered to be an aphrodisiac for men. This drink is described as a “creamy blend of nutmeg, cinnamon, sea moss and milk. Give it a try.

Smoothies

Probably the most common way people consume sea moss is in a smoothie. The kind of smoothie depends on the person – fruit-based, veggie-dominated, fruit juice-infused or chocolate-leaning. The ingredients are whatever you already use to make your smoothies, plus sea moss.

Jam/Thickening Agent

As stated earlier, sea moss is commonly harvested to extract carrageenan, a jelly-like substance often used by the food industry as a thickener. That means you can use it in stews, baked goods, smoothies (as mentioned above), etc. to thicken them up. And it’s perfect for those who are down with producing their own homemade jam and jelly. Again, because the sea moss taste is so subtle, the taste will stay dominated by whatever flavor of jam or jelly you’re making. It’ll just be infused with all the vitamins and nutrients sea moss brings to the table.

Water for Plants

And anything natural that boosts the health of humans also does so for plants. So, it only makes sense that when sea moss is added to water, and that water is used to keep your plants happy and “fed,” good things are going to happen. YouTube’s GoodFoodBaddie, a sea moss champion, says, “Sea moss is wonderful for the plants, and it provides the soil and the plants with so many nutrients. About a tablespoon of sea moss for every gallon of water you use should do the trick. And it’s good for vegetable gardens as well as indoor plants.

Facials

GoodFoodBaddie adds her voice to those globally who can’t stop raving about the benefits sea moss provides to our skin. She says, “Sea moss is great for ingesting, but it also does wonders for your skin.” How? Because sea moss helps your body produce collagen, earning it the nickname the “Vegan Collagen.” Like aloe, many people apply sea moss as a facial when seeking to shine and glow. Some mix a tablespoon of sea moss with a tablespoon of turmeric; they apply it to their face for 15 minutes, wash it off, and leave their abodes glowing.
