Jusan Hamilton became the first African-American to serve as a race director for a NASCAR national series event, controlling on-track activity in Saturdayโ€™s XFINITY Series race, per nascar.com.

โ€œI think this sport is open to everyone,โ€ Hamilton said. โ€œLike myself, if you find a passion in this sport and itโ€™s something you enjoy, I think thereโ€™s an opportunity for everyone to come into the sport.โ€

Hamiltonโ€™s new gig requires that he wears a headset in the control tower high above Auto Club Speedway, where he communicates with track and race officials while overseeing everything that occurs in the race, including penalties, crashes and cleanups. He also has to make quick decisions regarding safety personnel and even emergency services.

โ€œHaving a really good understanding of racing coming in has definitely benefited me,โ€ Hamilton said. โ€œIโ€™ve been observing, and Iโ€™ve been on the radio for a while now.โ€

Jim Cassidy, NASCARโ€™s senior vice president of racing operations, has played a significant role in Hamiltonโ€™s extensive experience across several departments.

โ€œHeโ€™s younger, but heโ€™s curious, and he probably knows as much as I do from a race procedure standpoint, having been a driver,โ€ Cassidy said. โ€œThere are some instances where Iโ€™m going to learn from him. โ€ฆ I want those working close with me to know everything I know, and I think that helps our relationship quite a bit, because heโ€™s a sponge. Itโ€™s a pleasure to work with him. A pleasure to see where heโ€™s come from, and where he could go.โ€

Hamilton says he โ€œnever really thought of (being the first African-American national series race director) in those terms. โ€ฆ Iโ€™m proud of it, and Iโ€™m really thankful for the team in the control tower.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve wanted to work in professional racing since I was a kid watching Kevin Harvick,โ€™โ€™ he added. โ€œIโ€™m very fortunate to have this opportunity. Iโ€™ve had the chance to learn so many different areas of the sport and business, thatโ€™s one of the things thatโ€™s best about working with NASCAR.โ€

โ€œBeing race director is similar to being the quarterback in football โ€” you have to know your job and the jobs of every other team member to be successful.โ€
