SHAPE Community Center hosted its 40th Annual Pan African Cultural Festival at Our Park. The event celebrates “Africa Freedom Day,” initially declared in 1958 by some of the most iconic leaders of the Pan African world, and officially moved to May 25 in 1965. This year’s festivities celebrated our history, ancestors and victories over all forms of oppression, while pointing to work still to be done. Music, food, dance and an African Market Place were available to all who attended including Swatara Olushola, Jawad, Osunbunmi Gaidi, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Deloyd Parker, Clarence, Takiyah & Amber Sirmons, Volunteer Houston, K-Rino, Alberta Jackson, Irene Braxton, Ramond Thompson, Eric Rose and countless others.
