The fact that “Underground” was taken off the air was a real injustice. The show was incredibly brilliant and I know it kept me on the edge of the couch. To say I was invested would be an understatement.
But life goes on. And thankfully, one of the stars of the show and its showrunner are partnering up again for a new project.
The story centers around two Black families who are described as “a devastating kaleidoscopic portrait of racism.”
According to the publisher of the 2016 novel, “Lovecraft Country” tells the story of a 25-year-old Army veteran Atticus Black, who goes on a journey across the Jim Crow South, accompanied by his uncle and childhood friend, to find his father Montrose, who has gone missing. Along the journey, they find “both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits.”
Bell will take on the role of Leti Dandle, a woman who “hustled her way across the country as an artist protesting for civil rights who now finds herself back home looking to plant some roots.”
“Lovecraft Country” will reunite Smollett-Bell with “Underground” showrunner Misha Green, who will serve as the scriptwriter and executive producer. Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Production company are also on board. JJ Abrams, Ben Stephenson and David Knoller are also producing.
Yann Demade is set to direct the pilot and also executive produce.
