Let’s be honest. Many of us can’t help but feel the Hispanic population in this country let us down this past presidential election season.
The Hispanic culture, particularly Hispanic men, showed up and supported Donald Trump over Kamala Harris for President in a major way. In fact, the Latino Trump vote was up 8 points from 2020. Many of us wondered how they could vote against what seemed to be their self-interest in returning Trump to the White House.
Surely, they heard what we heard, and that is a man who ran on fear tactics, promising America that his top priority is being tough on immigration because too many Mexicans are crossing the borders illegally and committing heinous crimes against women and children. Trump promised during his campaign and has continued the rhetoric that on his first day in office, there will be mass deportations.
Yet Hispanic people showed up in support of him anyway.
We convened a special panel to have a dialogue between people from the Hispanic community and the Defender panelists to discuss the why.
The Defender Roundtable special panel, which includes Que Onda Magazine publisher Gabriel Esparza and husband and wife Liz and Elliott Rodriguez, discussed what it was about Trump that resonated with Hispanic Americans. It’s a great discussion.
